Love Noir: The Music of Lenny, Kurt & Harold

The Official Description: Forget the Sound of Music…the Von Trapp children are asleep. Take a walk on the steamy side of Tin Pan Alley with songs of Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Weill, and Harold Arlen. Starring Lonny Smith and Maris Wicker

What You’ll Like: The musical selections worked very well together, with Wicker and Smith singing a combination of duets and solos throughout the set, under the direction of pianist Barbara Scheistrate. There are many songs included that you will be familiar with, even though you may not recognize the title listed in the program.

What You Won’t: Occasionally the evening felt rushed, clocking in at 50 minutes, as a singer would leave the stage immmediately after singing the final note of a song and the lights would shift quickly for the next song. The facility was also quite warm. Having a drink service would have made the performance more enjoyable. This production would have been a perfect fit for the Busboys and Poets venue. Also, a little bit of patter between songs would have helped the audience connect with the singers.

Overall: A lovely performance. Bring a date. And a drink.
