Performing a big musical with a big cast like Big River in a small space is no small task. Greenbelt Arts Center’s production succeeds in a big way. It starts with Jen Retterer’s set design. Covering the theater’s walls are printouts of the text of pages and illustrations from “Huckleberry Finn,” drawing audience members into the world of Mark Twain’s novel before they ever reach their seats. Surrounding a painted backdrop showing a bucolic rural scene are Lydia Wallis’ striking black and white line drawings of trees and reeds, in front of which is a low platform that serves as Huck’s raft, among other purposes. Save for a modest number of set dressing pieces, that’s all that is needed to provide a sense of place and a functional environment for the action.

Retterer, it should be noted, is a triple threat in the production. Besides her work on the set and a brief appearance in Act II as a foolish young girl, she is an excellent, thoroughly believable Tom Sawyer, being a loyal pal to Huck, complicating everyone’s life with goofily complicated schemes, and ultimately showing great courage. Retterer sings strongly as well, particularly in Tom’s “Hand for the Hog,” and later projects a very different vocal quality in the foolish girl’s “Arkansas.”

The central character, of course, is Huck, played in an engaging aw shucks way by Mike Cullhane. Huck is a long, demanding role — he is offstage only for a brief scene in Act II — and Cullhane’s energy never flags. He transitions seamlessly from his narrations of the story into interactions with the other characters and back again, and he clearly shows Huck’s moral growth as he comes to recognize his responsibility for Jim and others in his world. Cullhane does not have a pure Broadway-style voice, but he sells his songs effectively. “I, Huckleberry Me” and his duets with Jim, the escaped slave who is Huck’s companion on the raft (“River in the Rain,” “Muddy Water,” and “Worlds Apart”) are notable, and Cullhane’s sound is very consistent with the character. His diction on spoken lines is a bit murky at times, however, and he resorts to tugging on his overall straps a little too frequently.

The dominant voice and presence on stage belong to Kevin Sockwell as Jim. Sockwell uses his strong, penetrating, expressive high baritone instrument to great effect, not only in his duets with Huck but also in the powerfully moving second act solo, “Free at Last.” Sockwell’s Jim at times has a knowing, ironic take on things and people around him. Jim’s loneliness, sadness, fear, and yearning for freedom also register vividly. In any case, this is a slave who one cannot imagine ever having been subservient.

There are several memorable small and large performances among the large supporting cast. Dan McMillan’s drunken rendition of “Guv’Ment” pegs Pap Finn as an early prototype of the Tea Party. Penny Martin is tack-sharp as Huck’s Bible-spouting nemesis, Miss Watson. Dayleen DeRiggs has a beautifully sung, mournful solo as a slave woman in “The Crossing.”

The most important supporting roles belong to the Duke (Brian Binney) and the King (David Weaver), two con men who Huck and Jim pick up along the river. Binney, a polished actor who makes the Duke’s pastiche of Shakespeare lines even sound somewhat like Shakespeare, leads the very silly Act II opening number “The Royal Nonesuch,” as the pair deludes the local rubes with a tale of a preposterous humanoid monster (scarcely less preposterous, Twain would no doubt be amused to discover, than what one can find on cable TV channels nowadays). The Duke also has a perhaps unintentionally amusing prop moment when he wields a pad of Post-It notes. His partner in crime, Weaver’s King, is as oily as can be as he tries to lift the inheritance of an innocent girl, Mary Jane Wilkes (Spencer Nelson). What’s most significant is the evolution of the King and the Duke, as Huck and the audience see them, from amusing grifters to casually evil men who think nothing of selling Jim and other slaves down the river for a few dollars. The contrast between these fake aristocrats and the natural aristocracy of Jim is one of the show’s strongest points.

Like many in the cast, Binney (also Judge Thatcher) and Weaver (also a doctor) play multiple roles, and Ginny Zanner’s colorful costume design keeps up with the frequent changes involved. Denim-based for the most part, with countrified plaid or down and dirty shirts as appropriate to various characters, the men’s costumes also include respectable dark suits for the upscale characters. The women’s outfits are mainly of the skirt and blouse variety, and are likewise suitable to the period.

Generally, Mary Lou Fisher’s direction keeps the production moving smoothly, with due attention to the spectators in the side seating areas as well as the main bank of seats. She makes occasional good use of the theater’s two side posts and side aisles in ensemble numbers. Given the number of people per square foot of playing space, there are moments in the full-cast numbers (e.g., “Do Ya Want To Go to Heaven?”) in which movement becomes more a matter of traffic management than choreography. While this is not a dance-heavy show, choreographer Kathleen Moors provides some nice moments, such as the opening tap routine featuring the delightful Isabella Dodro.

Chris Wells’ band, some members of which were on stage at times, conveyed Roger Miller’s country/blues/gospel-influenced score with fine timing and energy. They were not note-perfect at all times, but in context of this show, the occasional imperfections fit the down-home atmosphere and did not distract. There were also some strained or off-pitch vocal moments in a few of the ensemble numbers. Tom Zanner’s lighting design, while leaving actors in shadows on a few occasions, generally made good use of the space’s somewhat limited resources, and it was particularly effective in distinguishing the night scenes (typically done in blue light) from others.

As distinct from shows mounted by some of the larger, more abundantly resourced, groups the area, Big River was clearly a community theater production, with several family groups prominent among the cast and production staff. But it is a good illustration of the proposition that community theater can be very good theater, and that an intelligently conceived community production that its participants care about can have a quality result.

Director’s Notes

Welcome to the literary world of Mark Twain.

As you enter our book sit back and enjoy your trip from St. Petersburg, Missouri down the Big River past Jackson’s Island. Drift by St. Louis and Cairo, Illinois where the Ohio empties into the Mississippi, continue south past Tennessee and you will end up in Arkansas. On the way you will meet the characters Samuel Clemens created, drawing from his own background, to populate his novel “The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn.”

“Huck Finn is a child of his time, like the author who created him. Both character and author struggled to recognize and correct some of the wrongs of their society. Both learned to listen to the teachings of their sound hearts.” — The Glencoe Literature Library Study Guide For The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn

Big River uses an ensemble cast in which the actors play multiple roles. In this production, we have also used nontraditional casting. This allows some of our talented cast to appear in roles normally reserved for members of the opposite sex. As a member of the audience we ask you to suspend disbelief and see the characters as they are meant to be.

I fell in love with Big River when I saw a performance by Deaf West Theatre at Ford’s Theater in Washington. The roles were played by both hearing and deaf actors using spoken English and American Sign Language combined with dance and storytelling. The fluid and energetic motions were a perfect accompaniment to the lively and sometimes haunting music and lyrics of Roger Miller. If you ever have an opportunity to see this production I urge you to do so. You can also view some selections on YouTube.

Special thanks go to my Assistant Director, Lela Zanner Moors, and her daughter, our Choreographer, Katy Moors, for their help in bringing this book to life. Not only have they served behind stage, but you will also see them appear in today’s performance. A show I direct wouldn’t be complete without our Costumer, Ginny Zanner, who is a founding member of both GAC and MAD and can also be seen in the chorus. And to make the ‘family’ complete, Tommy Zanner, Ginny’s son, is our lighting designer.

A shout out also goes to our Set Designer, Jen Retterer, who created the book you are ‘reading’ and also took over the role of Tom Sawyer when one of our cast had to withdraw, and to our Producer, Beryl Feldman, for her invaluable assistance and being our ‘Universal Understudy’ and filling in wherever needed.

And finally, a great big HUG to the talented cast, crew and orchestra for making it possible to share this wonderful show with you. Now I can put the wet noodles away until the next show.

Through May 19th
Reviewed May 5th, 2012

In 1963, a recent college graduate named Charles Webb decided that he was not yet ready to be a man or a mensch, so he bypassed working for money and wrote a dirty book, cunningly titled The Graduate. It was, for that era, the 50 Shades Of Grey of its day. Oh dear…what is polite society supposed to do with such a book? Make it into a hit movie and cultural yardstick for the era. Right?…Of course I’m right.

Lacking talent, intelligence and testicular fortitude, theatrical poobahs of the early 21st century, too fearful of attempting to produce original work, dreamed up a scheme requiring famous, but aging, actresses to come to Broadway and appear stark, raving naked!!!!…in an adaptation called…ta da…. The Graduate.

Your reviewer is a bit of a puritan about these things. She has nothing personal against naked people. Some of her best friends are naked. Even she was naked once. What she has trouble with is the memory of naked people. From here on out, any mention of the name Rachel Duda and your reviewer’s response will be, “I know what she looks like naked.”

The image of the lovely and dumpling shaped Ms. Duda burned into the farthest reaches of your reviewer’s pea brain comes courtesy of the Greenbelt Arts Center and its production of The Graduate. The Graduate is really a very sophisticated send up of the social transition of the mid 1960’s from country club youth dances and cotillions to youth disaffection and rebellion and GAC’s Producer/Director Jeffery Lesniak reflects that sophistication here.

The immediate problem with the show is the absence of a set designer. It is the reviewer’s understanding that the set was created and built by the actors at the last minute…so all of that is forgiven. No further discussion about that. But the music is pure Paul Simon and Arthur Garfunkel with bit of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. But no “Mrs. Robinson,” the Oscar-winning theme of the film.

Benjamin Braddock (Zachary Hamilton) is the pride and joy of his upwardly social, upper middle class suburban parents. Mr. and Mrs. Braddock (Bob Kleinberg, Mendy Ault) are the portrait of success…lovely home, in ground swimming pool, country club membership, elite social standing and fully stocked bar. They are actually very nice people living the lives expected of them in 1963. Braddock is a lawyer and Olive is a homemaker. Ault transports us back into time with her helmet headed coif (Denise A. Levien) and brocaded apparel (Dory Gean Cunningham) illustrating her satisfaction with and achievement of her goal..to marry well and raise enviable children and Braddock is an upstanding man even if he is an annoying father. Ben is as rumpled as his father is sharp; but whereas Mr. Braddock’s self-satisfaction is grounded in genuine achievement, Ben is a supercilious twit dependent on that success as he insults his father for it.

Benjamin returns home from college graduation to a liquor soaked party by the pool in his honor. His unexplained disaffection is a puzzle to his proud parents, but a lure to his father’s business partner’s wife, Mrs. Robinson (Rachel Duda).

Mrs. Robinson, long neglected by her husband and ruminating over the emptiness of her nest, takes comfort in alcohol until she sees the opportunity for some good old-fashioned nookie in her rebel without a cause. Though Mrs. R. seems like the aggressor in the encounter in Benjamin’s bedroom, it is Ben who asks her directly if she is trying to seduce him…..duh…. She claims not to be seducing him, but she’s stark, raving naked!!!! while she disclaims any interest in him.

Ben is angry, alienated and antagonistic towards his parents and his life; his consternation at Mrs. R.’s advance evolves into intrigue and a desire to relieve himself of his apparent virginity.

Mrs. R. and Ben spend the summer in hourly rate hotel room bliss until the Robinson daughter, Elaine (Laura McGee), returns from Berkeley…of course. Normally, this shouldn’t be a problem except that horny Ben has convinced himself that he is in love with the insipid Elaine. Hijinks ensue, but all is not well that ends well.

The show seems to be an anachronism, but its theme of college graduation and the diffidence of youth embarking on adult independence is very au courant. Ben, in his desire and attempt to bind his self-image to the Pepsi Generation, has the drive to leave home and see what life will bring him serendipitously. He discovers he does not care for blue-collar work….but he doesn’t care for any work; so he returns home to his childhood room and Mrs. Robinson, whose husband is zonked out on sleeping pills every night. It seems that each generation has its boomerangs.

The two family conflagration that erupts when Ben and Mrs. R. are found out is embarrassing and dispiriting. Mr. R. is the infuriated, liquor soaked, barbiturate zonked cuckold. Mrs. R. is the discounted woman having lost both her husband and her lover. Elaine, for the first time, realizes that not only is life not so simple and uncomplex, but that she is the complication in more ways than one. The Braddock parents are mortified and afraid for their standing among the neighbors as they gamely try family therapy in an attempt to blame themselves for Benjamin’s self-destructive ennui. And Benjamin, in his conceit, wants what he wants, whether he knows just what that is or not.

Ault is sympathetic in the extreme when she moves from contented mother to undeserved, blame taking guilt. She is sincere and genuinely baffled by the turn her perfect life has taken; but she is never judgmental as might be expected considering the era. It is hard to know here how close Mrs. Braddock and Mrs. Robinson are to each other. It is the relationship between the two husbands that matters but the effects of all this mishigas on the two lawyers and their partnership is never made clear.

Mrs. Robinson is aggressive and downright predatory, but Duda’s interpretation is sympathetic. She is a soft dumpling of a woman trapping her prey with questions without easy answers in her sugary, velvet voice. She is a naked prosecutor questioning her subject into a corner from which he can’t escape. Once Mrs. R. achieves what she wants, she discovers she has created a monster who is turning on her…an immature and self-destructive Frankenstein who won’t see beyond the limit of his own tumescence.

Zachary Hamilton starts out tentatively, but turns in a canny performance as Benjamin. He keeps his panties on. His conceited disdain graduates into galling insistence as he pursues the daughter at the expense of the mother, who does have a genuine affection for him even if there is nothing of interest to talk about with him.

Lesniak preserves the sophistication of the text while his actors give body…no pun intended…and warmth to the story at hand. There are no lessons to be learned here and certainly no morals to be taken. By today’s standard, this is reality show fare dressed up as art and nothing shocking or unbelievable is occurring at all. The ending is a let down, but that seems what was intended all along. GAC’s production is good but the film is still The Graduate to see.

Pippin is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Roger O. Hirson. This musical tells the story of Charlemagne’s son Pippin and Pippin’s quest to find meaning and fulfillment in his life.

Pippin (Ben Harris) had some difficulty in sustaining the high notes and at one point seemed to go through a voice change as he struggled to stay on key. His love interest Catherine (Jen Retterer) gave a fairly strong performance, but may have had some mic problems, as her voice simply disappeared a few times in the middle of a song. Catherine and Pippin did not seem as comfortable with each other as they perhaps should have been. We needed to see more growth in their relationship as they got closer with time. Missing that closeness made the show’s ending a bit weaker than it could have been.

King Charles of the holy Roman Empire was played perfectly by Brian Binney. His voice was clear and could be heard above the live orchestra. His expressions were great and his relationship with both Pippin (purposefully distant) and Fastrata and Lewis (alternately wary and disgusted) were believable and appropriate. Berthe, Pippin’s Grandmother was played with much enthusiasm by Erica Drezek. Her character is fun and lighthearted which Drezek managed to create.

The Leading Player was fairly devious. Hana Cai played the role with deviousness and cunning. She was perhaps a bit standoffish during some scenes, but overall she was believable. Her voice too struggled with staying on key.

Director Franklin Akers made a few decisions that were odd. One was to move a noisy wheeled platform out for Catherine and Pippin to sit on during “Love Song.” Why not have them on the floor, or just a bench if the sight lines preclude sitting on the floor? My least favorite decision was the last bit of the show when one character protected another character from continuing his legacy.

One disappointment in this production was the choreography. It was uneven, with just a few numbers utilizing the chorus effectively, such as “War Is a Science” and “The Finale.” One disappointment was that Berthe didn’t interact with her “men” until late in her song, so they were more distracting than adding to the scene. There were also players who did not know their dance steps and appeared very stiff.

Staging the show was also interesting. The audience was seated on three sides of the playing area, and there were many moments when the view from the side areas were blocked by cast members. One notable time was Berthe’s song “No Time At All.” You need to sit in the center seats if you’d like to participate as the lyrics weren’t visible to the sides. Set Designer Betsy Marks Delaney made good use of the area. She kept things simple, but with attention to detail so that you did not have to stretch your imagination to find out where you were location wise. Alison Rollins’ costumes were quite nice, mostly appearing authentic to the medieval time period.

In general, The Greenbelt Arts Center’s Pippin was an uneven performance with poor choreography, but believable acting made for a fun evening.

Director’s Notes

“Join us,” the Leading Player exhorts, as this fantastic and schizophrenic play begins. She goes on: “We have magic to do….romance… hearts to warm…as we go along our way.”

Following this, Pippin outlines a plan to become extraordinary, to find some great meaning too his life. And, surely as the oxymorons and anachronisms mount up, we get the feeling that everyone is dreaming.

And isn’t that, indeed, what life is like for most of us? In youth we dream dreams and establish grand plans which often fail to materialize. “Things never work out the way you expect them to” states one of the players.

So, Pippin is ME…and YOU. Pippin is Everyman (or, as a flaming feminist, I would say Everyperson.)

But what does actually happen is often far better than what we had planned…And that is what happens for Pippin. That extraordinary thing he seeks is actually belonging…. caring… loving. He doesn’t suspect this as he starts out, and he is not even sure about it when he finds it at the end. it will make time for him to come to terms with it, as it has with me… and maybe you. We learn that love is everything!

No grande finale, no fireworks, no fame or fortune…just peace. We would wish this for each of you, and I fervently hope that is what this production brings home to its audience.

Thank you for coming.

-Franklin Akers

The first thing Greenbelt Arts Center did right was to select Paula Vogel’s brilliant 1997 script to produce. Long before the Penn State scandal, before the investigations of pedophilia in the Catholic church had fully gathered steam, Vogel wrote this complex, funny, sometimes terrifyingly disturbing story of a 45-year-old uncle’s relationship with his 11-18-year-old niece. Vogel won a Pulitzer for her efforts, deserved at least in part because she presents the characters’ actions as part of a deeply human relationship, albeit a distorted and damaging one, not simply as a Manichean tale of abuser and victim. No one’s humanity is slighted, and the script holds out possibility of understanding, perhaps even a degree of forgiveness, for even the most flawed of people.

Lil’ Bit, the protagonist and narrator of this memory play, lives in the midst of a family that is not only dysfunctional but one in which everyone and everything is sexualized, down to the names they are called. It is a family that devalues all that the bright, adventurous, interesting Lil’ Bit wants to be, focusing only on her prematurely large breasts. Only Uncle Peck supports her ambitions to talk about history and literature, to go to college, to live in a wider world. He shows her the promise of freedom by teaching her to drive, a gift that lasts into her adulthood. But while he is teaching her, he is touching her, leading up to what he patiently hopes will be a time when they are fully lovers. He is simultaneously the best thing and the worst thing in her life.

As Lil’ Bit, Elizabethann English moves seamlessly between a ruefully ironic sensibility as an adult, looking back on what has happened and what it has meant to her, and as the girl she had been at various ages and various stages of her relationship with Peck. She has a particularly nice moment when, at the end of a scene in which Peck is doing a basement photo shoot of the then-13 year old Lil’ Bit, he tells her that he loves her. English breaks into a transforming smile at the thought of being loved by the one person in her world who pays attention to who she is.

As written by Vogel and portrayed by English, Lil’ Bit is not a passive victim. She actively collaborates in her relationship with Peck, setting limits — which Peck is careful not to transgress — but allowing, even encouraging, things to occur that she knows are wrong. Vogel does not use this facet of Lil’ Bit’s character to excuse Peck’s actions — he is an adult who has better reason than a young girl to know the locations of lines that must not be crossed — but Vogel does not shrink from the sight of a girl testing the power her sexuality can exert over a man. Nor does she pretend that, while Lil’ Bit survives the relationship with Peck, she comes away unscathed. By the end of the play, Lil’ Bit concedes that she is unable to live in her body, only above the neck and in her car. As interpreted by English, Lil’ Bit appears more sanguine about this than one might expect.

Other characters try without success to understand Peck, whose parts do not seem to add up to a coherent whole. He is a helpful man around the house and the community. He drinks too much. He had apparently searing experiences during World War II that he won’t talk about. He was a disappointment to his mother. He can form sexual relationships with children (not only with Lil’ Bit; there is a wrenching monologue in which he describes his grooming of Cousin Bobby on a fishing trip) but not adults. He may have been abused as a child himself. He speaks of a fire in the heart that cannot be quenched. Vogel’s writing provides a rich lode of possibilities for an actor to dig into.

Unfortunately, Bill Brekke is able to do little more than skim the surface. His consistently low-key, quiet, somewhat passive, one-level performance misses opportunities to portray the character’s cleverness, seductiveness, sweetness, self-deception, and nearly bottomless emptiness. Near the end of the play, for example, when Lil’ Bit decisively rejects him, he briefly lies down and then goes for a drink, but a sense of his being so totally crushed that he will drink himself to death over the next several years is lacking.

A three-person ensemble rounds out the cast. Jill Goodrich’s roles include Lil’ Bit’s mother and Aunt Mary (Peck’s wife). As the former, she gives a three-part, progressively drunker and progressively funnier, monologue on how women should drink. As Aunt Mary, she speaks poignantly of her patient understanding of her errant and damaged husband, blaming Lil’ Bit for seducing him. Both women know there is something very wrong going on between Lil’ Bit and Peck, and — perhaps in this way not too unlike supposedly responsible officials of academic or religious institutions — take no action to stop it. Jessica Powers-Heaven portrays Lil’ Bit’s sexually put-upon grandmother, who knows her husband asks only that she put food on the table and keep the bed covers rolled down. Ric Andersen has highly effective comic turns as Lil’ Bit’s high-decibel, vulgar, sexist, dirty old man of a grandfather and a short, shy, persistent boy trying unsuccessfully to get Lil’ Bit to dance with him.

The Greenbelt Arts Center space is a small black box, and the setting for the play is appropriately simple, consisting of a dinner table, a liquor stand, and a bench serving as a car and a hotel bed. The set is augmented by sporadic slide projections of period cars and, most effectively, of interspersed photos of Lil’ Bit and Vargas-style pinups in the photo shoot scene. The lighting works well in establishing and changing scenes in the various playing areas, and a well conceived and executed sound design provides a good sense of the period’s musical soundtrack (the all-too-appropriate “Young Girl, Get Out of My Mind” makes an appearance in the pre-show music, for example).

The play is set in the Beltsville area of Prince Georges County, not far from Greenbelt. Lil’ Bit and most of her Maryland family sometimes speak with Southern accents, while Uncle Peck, who hails from South Carolina, does not. Having lived in Prince George’s County during the time covered by the play (late 60s/early 70s), I don’t recall hearing that many accents of this sort, but this counts as merely a quibble.

As a most creditable production of a top-notch script, this show deserves a larger house than it has drawn during the first two weekends of its four-week run. Even for theater goers based in Virginia or DC, the commute to Greenbelt is not that long. It will be worth your trip.

Director’s Notes

This production marks a homecoming of sorts for How I Learned to Drive. The play’s references to the area including the Beltsville Agricultural Farms, Route 1, and the Beltway put Greenbelt squarely in Lil’ Bit’s backyard. In addition to its geographic proximity, GAC is an ideal space to put up this show. The intimate space of the black box allows makes this a very exciting place to mount a show that is both subtle and powerful, and connect with the audience along the way.

It was as an audience member that I first fell in love with this play. I was working at a summer theater during college, and How I Learned to Drive was the last show of our season. It was the only show that summer that I wasn’t involved with on some level, so I was able to enjoy opening night with the same fresh eyes as the rest of the audience. By the end of that performance I felt both exhilarated and totally shattered. I sat through every performance of that run, finding something new to enjoy each time.

The layers of comedy and depths of tragedy that Paula Vogel probes as the play unfolds provoke myriad responses in audience members. No two people will react to this play and its characters in the same way. I encourage you to share your reactions with others after the show, you may be surprised what others were thinking. In the meantime, thank you for coming to the show, and enjoy the ride.
