Two musicals received five awards, Camelot by 2nd Star Productions and Ragtime by Kensington Arts Theatre. Two plays received four awards, The Pillowman by Silver Spring Stage and Red by the Elden Street Players. Kensington Arts Theatre received the most awards, a total of seven for their productions of Ragtime and Next to Normal. The King and I is a musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein. It takes place in Siam in the early 1860’s. Anna is a school teacher who comes to teach the king’s children. She doesn’t realize that the king has over 50 children and she has a big job ahead of herself. She ends up teaching the king as well, and he teaches her a bit as well. Her relationship with the king is a major focus of the story and as Anna helps the King to become less barbaric in the eyes of Europe, she get closer to him as well.

This enjoyable, but long, production runs for one more weekend. Overall it had a nice pace, although the scene changes tended to drag a bit. Given the small playing space at the FCT stage, The King and I was an impressive accomplishment. Susan Noe’s costumes looked fantastic, with interesting textures on the colorful outfits. Kat Brais’ hair and makeup designs were also wonderful. The huge cast made for a tedious “March of the Siamese Children” scene (although it did give the parents sitting behind me the opportunity to take several photos with their loud, distracting camera (apparently the rules given in the pre-show announcements don’t apply to parents) although blessedly they did know how to turn the flash off). The “Small House of Uncle Thomas” ballet was nicely executed, with great lighting effects and masks.

The relationship between Anna (Chantal Campbell) and the King (Daniel Purcell) was a bit stiff, and at times didn’t feel comfortable. For example, the King’s final scene didn’t quite hit the mark for me, although the Prince (Stephen Kutzleb) was successful in shifting between overcompensating for his initial nervousness and accepting his new role as King. At the top of the show, Campbell’s whistling during the encouraging number “I Whistle a Happy Tune” was actually not too well done, but later in the show her whistling was much better. It made for an interesting introduction to Anna, showing her nervousness at her new family’s situation. Purcell was a serious, no-nonsense King, who rarely allowed his emotions to show. The romantic duet “We Kiss in a Shadow” by Lun Tha (Joseph Benitez) and Tuptim (Crystal McKinsey) was a highlight of the evening.

Fauquier Community’s The King and I was a pleasant evening of theater, marked by a huge cast and wonderful visuals throughout.

This has been an awesome collaborative effort of my amazing cast, crew, family, friends, and random strangers that we have begged to be a part of our adventure. The last week before the opening of any show is one of excitement, nerves, too much energy, and not enough sleep, but we have endeavored to put together a show that will be entertaining and dazzling. The Award Presentation will be held on March 17th at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. Tickets can be purchased for $15.50 at the Birchmere Box Office or through Ticketmaster (additional fees will apply). Last year the ceremony sold out, so order your tickets early!

In each of the thirty-eight categories, five nominees were selected based on the average scores of eight judges. In some categories, due to score ties, more than five nominees are announced. Nominations are provided in alphabetical order by nominee.

Over the last fifty years, Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, has endeared itself to the hearts of many for its deft portrayal of racial tensions in the rural south, and for the virtue of its characters, namely the “color-blind” lawyer, Atticus Finch. Christopher Sergel’s stage adaptation of the novel retells the story of the Finch’s, an Alabama family somewhat ostracized for their involvement in the trial of an accused black man, Tom Robinson. Told mostly through the experiences of the two Finch children, Jem and Scout, To Kill a Mockingbird inspires its audience to reflect on racial injustices of the past, and to cast away pride in pursuit of what is right and just.

Located west of the beltway in Fauquier County, Fauquier Community Theatre enters its 35th season in 2012-2013. Since the mid-1990’s, FCT shows have been held at Vint Hill Theater in Warrenton, VA, formerly a movie theatre for the now defunct Army base. The converted space is a charming venue to see a production and a reminder of the unique locality of community theater. To Kill a Mockingbird marks the third of five shows in its current season.

Although several cast members are children, the program cautions some of the language and themes in To Kill a Mockingbird might be too mature for a younger audience. The warning is issued mostly because of the character’s use of racial slurs, also present in the book. The plot also centers around the framed accusation of a black man accused of raping a white woman of Macomb’s lower-class. While the play promises enjoyment for its adult audience, especially those familiar with Lee’s acclaimed novel, I echo the cautionary sentiments and advise leaving the kids at home.

The play begins with an introduction to Macomb, Alabama, a rural Alabama town rife with Depression-era poverty, neighborhood gossip, and racial division. We are first introduced to “Miss Maudie” Atkinson, played by Teena Stevic in this production. Stevic mostly succeeds in depicting her role as the Finch’s friendly neighbor, who frequently expresses sympathy for the Finch’s, especially the often derided, Atticus Finch. Perhaps the only pitfall to Stevic’s portrayal of the character is her southern accent, which can sound contrived at times.

We then meet Scout, her role captured by Maria Luetkemeyer. Although Scout’s character is written as six-years-old when the play begins, Luetkemeyer is noticeably older than the play prescribes. The older casting blurs the relationship slightly between Scout and Jem, played by Michael D’Arcangelis. Jem is supposed to be four years older than his sister. This discrepancy is lessened by Luetkemeyer’s success in portraying Scout’s naïvety and zealous curiosity. Scout’s tomboy personality appropriately supposes a desire to be included and accepted by Jem, a character who maintains boyish interests in football, guns, and throwing rocks at the weather-beaten home of the fabled Boo Radley.

The play’s two stars, in my opinion, were Jim Constable and Evan Jones, playing the roles of Atticus Finch and Bob Ewell, respectively.

Constable, who takes up the role of Atticus Finch after a 30-year hiatus from theater, skillfully portrayed Finch’s admirable character, typified by his fearless defense of Tom Robinson, whose innocence he fights to protect despite popular opposition and threats to his life. With equal adroitness, Constable shows Atticus’ extreme humility and portrays the more subtle virtues in Finch’s character, such as the loving patience he shows his children, who, for superficial reasons, under-appreciate their father throughout much of the play.

Playing the villain and Tom Robinson’s accuser, Evan Jones represents the very picture of Bob Ewell’s character I had in my head while reading the book. His comfort with the role is most noticeable in the courtroom scenes where Ewell’s petulant defiance manifests repeatedly through a series of grumbled outbursts aimed at Atticus Finch, who remains bent on exposing Ewell as a shamed liar, and drunken abuser.

Great casting is aided by talented costume design, led by Susan Noé. Likely drawing some inspiration from the acclaimed 1962 film version of the play, Ewell is dressed in baggy denim overalls and a plaid shirt, a costume appropriately matching the character’s rough-and-tumble persona. Atticus dons a respectable courtroom suit throughout the play and Jem’s mud-splattered jeans foretell his character’s hijinks. Others will enjoy the recognizably southern-style dresses worn by Maudie and Miss Stephanie, the neighborhood gossip girl.

The relatively simple and open set design proved effective when transitioning from the Finch’s neighborhood street to the courtroom scenes. The courtroom is smartly arranged so the off-stage audience sits in position of the courtroom jury, with Atticus and the prosecuting attorney, Mr. Gilmer, played by Martin Gacioppo, directing their comments to a complicit audience.

The appearance of a weather-beaten door and poorly maintained shrubbery outside the Radley house, home of an intriguing recluse who makes one pivotal appearance in the play, creates some–not all–of the mystique familiar in the novel. Window planters, and well juxtaposed color on the homes of the Finch neighbors bring warmth to the set and strengthen the impression you are looking out at a familiar scene in the middle-class, southern neighborhood.

Any lover of Harper Lee’s story, heralded as a quintessential American novel and taught in classrooms nationwide, will enjoy this production. Those less familiar with the novel will still enjoy superb individual acting and an inviting set that bring to life a remarkable tale, lauded for its humanism and high morals.

Into the Woods is a musical with music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. Combine several fairy tales in one forest and you’ll find out what happens after the “happily ever after.” A baker and his wife long for a child. Jack is forced to sell his best friend Milky White for “no less than five pounds.” Red Ridinghood has a sweet tooth and a thirst for blood. Cinderella gets a date to the ball. Rapunzel finally lets her hair down. These and other stories are just part of the tales told in the wood!

Fauquier Community Theatre has put together a splendid production with a great cast and a gorgeous set design. If Nancy Daugherty and crew don’t get recognized by WATCH for their set painting, and Tim Kirk and Martha Lynch aren’t recognized for their set design, a travesty will have occurred. Arrive early and walk near the stage so you can marvel at it. Trivia question: how many animals appear on the set? Hint: Don’t forget to count the mice in Jack’s home!

Gene Bates, the Baker, made his character likable and convincing. Unsure yet determined he set out to do whatever was necessary in order to have a child. At first thinking Bates could do it all on his own he quickly realized that he was in over his head. The Baker’s Wife, played by Jessica Hickling, was a strong character with a determined spirit. One of the spunkiest characters was Little Red Ridinghood played by Ceci Galvin. She had this obsession with knives and revenge. She was such a funny character, always making faces as she imagined hacking up the wolf. Richard Perryman played a very convincing Wolf, with an awesome costume and makeup (by Tim Kirk).

Corinne Shumaker (Cinderella) had a fairly strong voice and used much emotion to play the role with conviction. She and her Prince, played by Scott Heine, were comfortably uncomfortable around each other. Heine used his ego to be as charming as possible yet his sincerity was sorely lacking. All of the cast enjoyed hamming up their characters to make them larger than life. They kept the pace up and the energy high throughout the performance. Into the Woods is a long show, with many of the people sitting near us thinking the show was over at the intermission after the 80 minute-long first act.

Most fascinating was the set for Into the Woods. Tim Kirk and Kirk Noe built a forest on the stage complete with huge trees, moss, hidden entrances. Next came the incredible painting by Nancy Daugherty who did double duty by playing Cinderella’s wicked stepmother. Daughtery used her incredible talent to create the leaves on the textured trees, various animals, rocks that appeared three-dimensional, and more. Everything was so detailed and perfectly created I found myself trying to find all the creatures hidden in the set when the lights came up after the show.

With a few minor technical lighting issues (several scenes were very dark and a few actors couldn’t find their light so they performed in darkness) and some notes that were a little too high to reach by the charming princes, the overall effect was one of a realistic tale of life in the woods by a group of folk who may not have chosen to live quite as happily ever after as they had hoped. FCT’s Into the Woods was a fun, must see show for anyone who believes in happily ever after. Be aware that this fairy tale really isn’t appropriate for young children.

The Man Who Came To Dinner takes place during a wintry Christmas when Sheridan Whiteside, the famous producer, lecturer, philanthropist, and all around grumpy man, slips on a piece of ice and becomes the unexpected houseguest to the Stanley family. Mrs. Stanley is thrilled to have such a famous guest while Mr. Stanley thinks Mr. Whiteside is a pain in the neck and needs to go. When Mr. Whiteside’s secretary falls in love and announces her engagement, Whiteside brings in the big guns to get her to stay. A play full of heart, soul, laughter, and penguins!

FCT’s opening night production was fairly solid. There were some interesting “dramatic pauses” and some line looping to go back and pick up cues, but for the most part very well staged. Jack Seeley as Sheridan Whiteside was the classic curmudgeon, full of pomp and arrogance. He quickly had everyone jumping to do his every command. Seeley was brash and angry, but also had a soft spot for the Stanley children Richard and June played by Marc White and Hannah Malinowski. Towards them he was bordering on kind as he told them to follow their dreams. Not everyone asked how high when Sheridan yelled “Jump!” such as Mr. Stanley, portrayed by Scott Pierce as a frustrated victim; but his rally late in the show was a joy to watch, with a gleam in his eye as he counted down the time to Whiteside’s eviction.

Maggie Cutler, Sheridan’s secretary took Whiteside’s mood swings in stride. Played by Corrine Shumaker, she was calm, cool and collected. She and Seeley seemed to have a good working relationship and were comfortable together on stage. Maggie’s love interest Bert Jefferson, the town newspaperman, (Jim Harris) gave a solid performance. He moved well on stage and seemed to be constantly upbeat and easy-going. Harris got along well with everyone even the outgoing Hollywood star Lorraine Sheldon played by Colleen Shumaker. Shumaker made the character uniquely hers with over dramatic accounts of famous liaisons and her wild affairs with all the Hollywood greats. She was fun to watch. An unexpected joy was Kathleen Donovan as Whiteside’s nurse, Miss Preen. She was generally on stage for only a short time, but each appearance was marked by an opportunity for Whiteside to belittle her. Donovan’s reactions and building exasperation with each insult was wonderful.

Set Designer Richard Perryman made use of levels to draw the audience to look at all the parts of the stage. There were a few times when actors were a little close together, but that is because a 1950’s wheelchair took up a good bit of the playing area. The costumes were well done by Holly Czuchan and Susan Noe. Lorraine’s dress sparkled while Maggie’s attire was much more modest and down to earth.

All in all this was a solid opening night performance of is a theatre classic appropriate for all ages.
