Q: How long have you been acting? What was your first role?
A: My first role was a fanatic in the play Moses and the Freedom Fanatics. And I have been acting since 1999.

A: I don’t think I have a role that I would kill to play. =)

A: Staying healthy, and of course the choreography haha!

A: Well, I’m not sure yet but I’m auditioning for the ballet of ‘Sleeping Beauty’

A: Becoming state champion in piano playing because piano is something I want to be known for other than singing, and piano is one of my passions.

Q: What is your dream vacation?
A: Italy or Scotland because they are both amazing places and one of my FAVORITE actors was born in Scotland.

Q: Would you rather have $1,000,000 or know the date you are going to die?
A: I’d rather have $1,000,000 because knowing the date you’re going to die would just make you dread everyday until that day comes.

Q: What candy bar are you most like?
A: The Butterfinger…and I’m not sure why haha

Q: Would you rather have a kangaroo or a giraffe?
A: A Giraffe because they are one of my favorite animals =)

Wendy Martin, French horn

Q: How are you like your character?
A: I am like the French horn because I can be smooth and harmonious with my sense of humor and ability to relate to others, but every now and again, I hit a sour note with a bad joke.

Q: How long have you been playing your instrument?
I’ve played the French horn since I was 11 years old. I originally started on flute for four days, but quickly found out that there were way too many flute players! I also play the piano.

Q: What role would you kill to play?
A: The role I’m already playing in life…super mom, loving friend, and horn girl a-go-go.

Q: What’s been the most challenging part of participating in Pippin?
Playing the sixteenth notes! And not crying when hearing Josh’s beautiful voice.

Q: What’s your next show or production?
A: The British Are Coming! concert with the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra.

Q: What superpower would you want to have?
A: I’d like to have the power to always lift the spirits of the people I love most, when they’re feeling down or are in need.

Q: What non-theater-related life goal do you have?
A: A goal I’ve achieved and work hard to maintain is staying fit and active. This healthy lifestyle helps me maintain my vitality and passion for life.

Q: What is your dream vacation?
A: A warm beach, with a warm man, and a drink to warm my insides.

Q: Would you rather have $1,000,000 or know the date you are going to die?
A: I’d take the money. Who wants to anticipate the day they’re going to die. That’s depressing!

Q: What candy bar are you most like?
A: Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups…because they contain a perfect combination of sweetness and nuttiness…and can be shared so nicely.

Q: Would you rather have a kangaroo or a giraffe?
A: A giraffe…they’d make for a good shopping companion. You could leave them in the car and always find your way back to your vehicle in a crowded lot.

Q: If you could go back to high school but keep all the life lessons you’ve learned since your time in high school, would you do it?
A: No, I wouldn’t go back. I’ve achieved too much in my life, and I look to the future to achieve even more and to continue to live every day to the fullest.

Q: How are you like your character?
A: Well, I mean I play the guitar. And I’m kind of, I don’t know, absent minded? What?

Q: How long have you been acting, and playing guitar?
A: Er, acting since I was eight I think. Playing the guitar for two years.

Q: What role would you kill to play?
A: Definitely a tie between Jamie in The Last Five Years or Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. I mean, come on, who secretly does not want to be Judas?

Q: What’s been the most challenging part of participating in Pippin?
A: Just me? Transistioning probably. The switch from space to stage was gut-wrenching. 

Q: What superpower would you want to have?
A: Ha, controlling time because I don’t always say the right thing.

Q: What non-theater-related life goal do you have?

A: If I had $1,000,000, I could could set all the tests necessary to find my death day! But I guess that’s pointless.

Q: If you could go back to high school but keep all the life lessons you’ve learned since your time in high school, would you do it?
A: Um, go back?

Prince William Little Theatre has staged a fun production of the 1970s hit musical, Pippin. Awash with the hippie movement’s free love, anti-establishment vibe, the story revolves around Pippin, a prince in search of his “corner of the sky.” Alternating between medieval fantasy and reality, Pippin meets many colorful characters on his journey.

It’s a dance heavy show, and director/choreographer Adrienne Showker does a fantastic job with the choreography. The ensemble as a whole handles the intricate synchronized moves with varying degrees of success, but Showker does showcase the appropriate talents where needed. Her “orgy” scene, in particular, is incredibly beautiful and graceful, and soloist Melanie Gibson really shines.

Pippin is played with awkward charm and clear vocals by Joshua Daniels. His real life wife, Valerie Chamness, plays his young stepmother Fastrada with a lovely soprano and a wicked edge of fun. Pippin’s love interest, Catherine, is well acted by Meredith Ford. Catherine’s son, Theo, is played by the adorable Sam Elston, who is very expressive and has presence even at the age of 10. Drew Prendergast also made his cameo roles memorable. There was a lack in outrageousness in a few of the other characters…this isn’t a show for subtlety.

There were some opening night lighting issues that will no doubt be resolved during the rest of the run, which will be welcome as the lighting concept (Tim Kirk) is thoughtful and creative.

The Players were all working hard, but need to remember that the audience is always watching them and that their faces must stay engaged. Some of the ensemble singing wasn’t as strong as it needed to be…perhaps in the large space it would be effective to have more overhead or floor microphones in place to pick up the sound.

The huge auditorium may have hindered efficient blocking. There were dead spaces when cast members traveled from one area of the set to the other which let the intensity of the scenes stagnate.

The gorgeous set pieces were painted by ensemble performer and artist Nancy Daugherty. It’s a true shame that Daugherty wasn’t in a more featured role; her strong voice and animated face stand out in every scene.

Costumes by Susan Noe and Sandy Malinowski were bright, imaginative, and perfect for the show. The orchestra capably played the demanding score. Props (Zina Bleck) were bright and magical. Kudos to the running crew, who must have had their hands full with rapid fire costume changes.

Pippin is a tough show, requiring a mixture of rock and musical theatre style vocals, great dancing, and magic. This production doesn’t display all of its strengths, but it makes for a satisfying evening at the theatre.

Q: How are you like or unlike your character?
A: Like Pippin, I’m constantly driven to search for great things in life; however, I’m not too driven to notice when I have something great.

A: The songs have been the most challenging part, simply because I do not usually sing in this particular style.

A: Teleportation would be nice, ’cause then I could visit Valerie on long tours, although I could do the same thing and more with flight. Telekinesis would be my second choice, I think.

A: A month long trip with Valerie through Italy Ireland, then Paris…. and do I really need to tell you why?

Q: How are you like your character? How are you unlike your character?
A: My character is spontaneous and irrational…alot like me.

Q: What’s been the most challenging part of participating in Pippin?
A: The amount of time that has to be put into it

Herb Tax, Bass

Q: How are you like or unlike your instrument?
A: Sort of tall, don’t fit in small cars well. My tuning doesn’t change drastically with changes in temperature.

Q: How long have you been acting, directing, playing bass?
A: Acting for 35 years, diredting for 10 years, playing bass for 15 years.

Q: What was your first role?
A: Fleance in MacBeth.

Q: What role would you kill to play?
A: I wouldn’t actually kill someone for a role but Erik (the Phantom) in Phantom of the Opera, let’s see… great music, fun acting, starts out with the girl, spectacular death.

Q: What’s been the most challenging part of participating in Pippin?
A: Not being on stage.

Q: What’s your next show or production?
A: Don’t know yet.

Q: What superpower would you want to have?
A: Reading minds/telepathy, it would be a lot easier to know what people want even if it hurts your feelings.

A: To make a permanent & positive difference in the world, fear of being forgotten.

A: A long trip to a beach with someone who loves me, DUHHHHH.

A: $1,000,000 – I can use it to do so much good – I’ve heard the date thing already before.

Adrienne Showker, Director and Choreographer

Q: How long have you been directing and choreographing? What was your first role?
A: This is my first show to direct although I have “directed” dance shows for over 20 years as well as The Nutcracker for IPAY in Chantilly for three years. My background is in dance-I studied all through my youth and then at Kent State University as well as George Mason University. I owned my own dance studio for 15 years and then taught for Creative Dance Center in Chantilly for 5. I actually quit teaching to try my hand at theatre and fell in love instantly about four years ago.

Q: What role would you kill to play?
A: I have always wanted to play Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire. In doing research for a recent audition, I discovered that Blanche and I are very much alike so it feels like a natural role for me. Unfortunately, I think I am too “mature” now for the role.

Q: What’s been the most challenging part of participating in Pippin?
A: I think trying to direct AND choreograph was perhaps a little much. This show is very dance heavy, especially the way I’ve chosen to do it, but the cast has really rallied and stepped up. They are an extremely talented group of people-triple threats- and I was blessed to have gotten to work with them.

Q: What’s your next show or production?
A: I have no idea! Definitely going to take a break for a bit, but it usually doesn’t last long.

Q: What superpower would you want to have?
A: I think incredible strength-it would make load in’s and strike’s so much easier!

Q: What non-theater-related life goal do you have?
A: Retiring on an island has always been a dream of mine. I like the sun, the sand and the surf. I would like to live in a slower paced environment and take the time to sip ice tea, feel the breeze and play cards on the veranda. Sounds corny-but true!

Q: What is your dream vacation?
A: See above! OR I would love to travel for 3 months through Greece, Italy and other parts of Europe-see some castles, some exciting landscapes and meet people from all over the world.

Q: Would you rather have $1,000,000 or know the date you are going to die?
A: $1,000.000! Who cares when you are going to die? You can’t do anything about it and having that moolah would sure make the time here a lot more fun!

Q: What candy bar are you most like?
A: Whatchamacalllit (if I spelled that right). I like to think I am an eclectic collection of different tastes all mooshed into one.

Q: Would you rather have a kangaroo or a giraffe?
A: Neither! Where would I put one? And then there’s the whole clean up problem. I guess if I had to choose, I would rather have a kangeroo-the word is more fun to say and their pouches are pretty cool.

Q: If you could go back to high school but keep all the life lessons you’ve learned since your time in high school, would you do it?
A: Absolutely not! High School was a nightmare for me-but ask me about going back to 28 and I would say absolutely yes.

Dave Shuma, Trumpet

Q: How are you like your character? How are you unlike your character?
A: I am like a trumpet because, I can be soft and gentle, but then, can explode with a burst of creative energy. I am unlike many trumpet players because, I am a rather modest and soft spoken individual, where many trumpet players are kind of brash and arrogant. 

Q: How long have you been playing trumpet? What was your first role?
A: I have been playing trumpet for 47 years. My first real gig, was playing “Tijuana Taxi”, “Music to Watch Girls By”, and “Teaberry Shuffle” (Herb Alpert and the TJB arrangement) in a 6th grade talent show.

Q: What role would you kill to play?
A:   The lead trumpet book for The Full Monty, because the music in this show really drives home a message to the audience…  

Q: What’s been the most challenging part of participating in Pippin?  Sitting through 84 measures of rests, playing one note, a high Bb or C no less, then another 84 measures of rests. Trumpets are made to sing, not sit 🙂 Kind of like a Porsche…just no good sitting in the garage.

Q: What’s your next show or production?
A: Annie Get Your Gun (the revival version)

Q: What superpower would you want to have?
A: The Kavorka, because every man really wants to have the lure of the animal.

Q: What non-theater-related life goal do you have?
A: To make a lasting mark on the lives of others, by bringing joy and happiness to so many,  just because of the type of individual you are…

Q: What is your dream vacation?
A: St. John, U.S.V.I., because it is the epitome of paradise in my eyes. Private beaches some even clothing optional, warm Caribbean waters gently touching the smooth sand, snorkeling the pristine reefs, great rum, beach massages by very adept fingers…and of course, duty free shopping!

Q: Would you rather have $1,000,000 or know the date you are going to die?
A: Show me the money! That one mil would provide a plethora of great experiences. I live for today, and when I die, is when I die. As they say, live every day like it’s your last!

Q: What candy bar are you most like?
A: Green M&M’s, because, that says it all! It’s the new color of Love…

Q: Would you rather have a kangaroo or a giraffe?
A: Kangaroo, because they are well grounded, very agile, look good in boxing gloves, and pack some kind of punch!

Q: If you could go back to high school but keep all the life lessons
you’ve learned since your time in high school, would you do it?
A: No, I like who I am now. The experience of growing up and learning those lessons, is one which does not need repeating. Life is great, and now is the time to savor it, because of all those life lessons learned. 

Steven Field, Ensenmble

Q: How long have you been acting? What was your first role?
A: As a kid I did a few plays and little things, but I didn’t really get serious about it until last year 07-08 when I played Lamar in Godspell.

Q: What role would you kill to play?
A: I’m not a very violent person so I don’t think I would necessarily KILL anybody, but in this production I think I would have a good time as either Leading Player, Lewis, or Pippin. I just think that I would have a fun time molding into those roles and in a way, I’m a little bit like all of them.

Q: What’s been the most challenging part of participating in Pippin?
A: I would say that the most challenging part for me was learning my voice part and then having to try to remember all my lines/ singing after I got laryngitis 3 weeks before the opening of the show and not being able to talk for a couple weeks. 

Q: What’s your next show or production?
A: I’m in the ensemble for Osbourn High School’s production of AIDA in the spring directed by our very own Lanny Henzell (Leading Player).

Q: What superpower would you want to have?
A: There are many superpowers that I might want to have such as: super strength, shape shifting, and super speed. With these powers I believe that I could conquer…..*cough*….I mean save the world and make it a better place to live…….AND IT’D BE SUPER AWESOME!!

Q: What non-theater-related life goal do you have?
A: All I really want in life is to be happy and to help others and bring them happiness in any way that I can.

Q: would you rather have $1,000,000 or know the date you are going to die?
A: I would 100% want the $1,000,000 over my death date because I believe that you should live life to the fullest no matter how much time you have left. Plus it would make me depressed that every time I turn around I remember that I only have x amount of days to live before I kick the bucket.

Q: What candy bar are you most like?
A: I think that I am mostly like a 3 musketeers because I am simple, yet complicated……enjoyable, soft, and fluffy.

Q: Would you rather have a kangaroo or a giraffe?
A: YES!!!…..why not? Yea, chew on that for a while.

Q: If you could go back to high school but keep all the life lessons you’ve learned since your time in high school, would you do it?
A: Of course!!!!……get it?….cuz I’m still in high school….get it?……geeze! Rough crowd.

Lanny Henzell, the Leading Player

Q: Is Lanny your real name?
A: Yes, my real name–NOT a nickname.

Q: How are you like and unlike your character?
A: I think I am most like my character because I am certainly the life of the party. I like to make sure everyone’s having a good time and enjoying themselves. I think we differ on a bunch of different issues, but I don’t want to give away all my secrets. 

Q: How long have you been acting? What was your first role?
A: HA!! I have been acting for forever. My first role was in 1986 when I played Charlie Brown in Charlie Brown’s Christmas in elementary school.

Q: What role would you kill to play?
A: THIS ONE!!! I have wanted to play this role for well over 15 years. Other than that. . . Effie in Dreamgirls. . . hey, it could happen.

Q: What’s been the most challenging part of participating in Pippin? 
A: I think the hardest thing is just making sure that I’m on my game as much as possible so that I never let down my castmates. 

Q: What’s your next show or production? 
A: Next up I’m directing Aida at Osbourn High which opens in April. After that I’ll plan out my next season and see.

Q: What superpower would you want to have?
A: I wouldn’t mind being able to read someone’s mind every once in awhile. I am never certain what others are thinking. 

Q: What non-theater-related life goal do you have?
A: I just want to be happy. As long as I can manage that, I’m doing okay. 

Q: What is your dream vacation?
A: I have wanted to go to Budapest for as long as I can remember. I’m not sure why, but it just seems like a cool place. 

Q: Would you rather have $1,000,000 or know the date you are going to die?
A: Oh, neither! I don’t think either would make life better. 

Q: What candy bar are you most like?
A: Whatchamacallit. No one knows what’s really in there, but it’s fan-frickin’-tastic!

Q: Would you rather have a kangaroo or a giraffe?
A: Um. . .kangaroo? Because a giraffe would be a horrid apartment pet. 

Q: If you could go back to high school but keep all the life lessons you’ve learned since your time in high school, would you do it?
A: Naw, I’m good thanks!

Melanie Gibson, Player, Dance Captain

Q: How are you like and unlike your character?
A: My character takes on many different roles throughout the show depending on the situation, much like we do in everyday life. Although I think that my character is far more over the top and obvious with her intentions than I am in real life…although my sisters would probably disagree…

Q: How long have you been acting? What was your first role?
A: I have been on the stage and dancing since I was like 2 or 3 years old. My first acting role was probably an angel (true acting it took there) in a church Christmas Pageant. My favorite roles though have been my characters from Metropolitan Performing Arts Theatre’s All in the Timing and Raggedy Andy in Metropolitan Performing Arts Center’s Santa’s Frosty Follies.

Q: What role would you kill to play?
A: I would kill to play Velma Kelly from Chicago or Sally Bowles from Cabaret. Both are roles of strong, smart and funny women, and I would love to know what it is like to have that kind of confidence and abandon. Plus the dancing in those shows is amazing!

Q: What’s been the most challenging part of participating in Pippin?
A: The most challenging part of Pippin for me has been the singing…and it’s a musical! I know, irony, right? But I have been working on it (Bless Milton and the altos for their patience) and having fun.

Q: What’s your next show or production?
A: Well, I hope to audition for PWLT’s Noises Off, so we will see…

Q: What superpower would you want to have?
A: As dorky as this sounds, I would like to have super communications skills. I want to be able to clearly (and tactfully) express what I am thinking, and more importantly understand completely what message someone else is trying to convey.

Q: What non-theater-related life goal do you have?
A: Although quite cliché, I just want to be happy and give back as much as I can (and to be a pirate).

Q: What is your dream vacation?
A: A life long cruise, travelling the world, with fantastic food and an unlimited budget.

Q: Would you rather have $1,000,000 or know the date you are going to die?
A: Could I have both? I’d probably prefer the money; I worry enough as it is.

Q: What candy bar are you most like?
A: A Peppermint Patty: decadent on the outside and refreshingly minty inside (just kidding).

Q: Would you rather have a kangaroo or a giraffe?
A: A kangaroo. I am tall enough and have always wanted to be able to jump better.

Q: If you could go back to high school but keep all the life lessons you’ve learned since your time in high school, would you do it?
A: Never.

Cana Jordan Wade, Ensemble (Sin: Lust)

Q: How are you like and unlike your character?
A: I’m like my character during the goofy moments in the show – ‘cos I feel like a goofball most of the time anyway. I am unlike my character when I try to portray the ‘Lust’ deadly sin….which goes back to me acting like a goofball 😛 So it’s a challenge.

Q: How long have you been acting? What was your first role?
A: Since high school. I consider my first role Dr. Rolanda T. Finsdale in Lil Abner. I also worked tech in high school for other shows.

Q: What role would you kill to play?

Q: What’s been the most challenging part of participating in Pippin?
A: Stepping out of my comfort zone.

Q: What’s your next show or production?
A: Noises Off! I’ll be doing something with it I’m sure. But not auditioning. Working tech.

Q: What superpower would you want to have?
A: A body of steel that can withstand anything. There would be no injuries ever!!! 😀

Q: What non-theater-related life goal do you have?
A: To be content. It’s the ultimate peace.

Q: What is your dream vacation?
A: Ireland. So I can walk every where and tread on the ground where my ancestors lived.

Q: Would you rather have $1,000,000 or know the date you are going to die?
A: The money. Too afraid of death. It’s like having surgery. I just want the surgeon to do what they are going to do. I don’t want to know the details or the process.

Q: What candy bar are you most like?
A: Chocolate fiber bars. ‘Cos I’m just that boring 😛

Q: Would you rather have a kangaroo or a giraffe?
A: Kangaroo. Easy storage space.

Q: If you could go back to high school but keep all the life lessons you’ve learned since your time in high school, would you do it?
A: Nah. High school was the exact time to learn all the lessons that I did. They shaped me into the person I am today.
