2012 NVTA One-Act Play FestivalBy Laura & Mike Clark • Jun 16th, 2012 • Category: Reviews
The 2012 NVTA One-Act Play Festival opened last evening at the James Lee Community Center in Falls Church, Virginia. Three performances were given. Two were monologues and one drama presented by a cast of five. The drama Bulimics Anonymous was an original piece written and directed by one of the cast members. The other two performances were monologues, of which one was an original work and the other was a previously published drama by a female actress. Although the Friday night audience was small, all seemed to enjoy the performances.
After the conclusion of each piece the 2012 Festival Judges gave their critique of each of the performances, with positive notes as well as highlighting areas that could use improvement. All of the judges are given a time of five minutes which was controlled by the time-keeper. Each of the three judges have had many years acting, directing, and producing in the DC area. The 2012 judges are: Michael Replogle, director and program originator of the Fairfax Academy Professional Musical Theatre & Actor’s Studio, Kathryn Silvia-d’Alelio, Assistant director and Choreographer for Paul VI High School Theatre, and Alex Zavistovich, a founder of the Lean & Hungry Theater and the Molotov Theatre Group both in Washington DC.
NVTA also awards scholarships to students in both performance and technical theatre. This year two acting scholarships were given. First place went to Jenna Kraynak, of Mt. Vernon High School. Second place went to Katie Atansio of Liberty High SChool. The technical theatre scholarship was awarded to Robert M. O’Brien of Osbourn Park High School.
There will be two performances tonight and next Friday and Saturday will also feature two performances. The performances begin each evening at 7:30 PM. On Sunday June 24th, a reception and awards ceremony will be held. The reception beings at 6:00, with the awards presented at 7:00.
