2nd Flight Theatre Company Merges With College Community TheatreBy Laura & Mike Clark • May 7th, 2008 • Category: News
2nd Flight Theatre Company announce their merger with College Community Theatre in Sterling, Virginia. “This is an excellent opportunity for both theaters” said Artistic Director, Shannon Khatcheressian. The merger was finalized in April 2008 and all productions will now be performed at the Waddell Theater, located on the NOVA Sterling Campus. The company will be performing three shows for the 08-09 season, with the third slot remaining open for guest director applications available the end of May.
ShowBizRadio spoke with Shannon Khatcheressian through email about the merger:
SBR: What is the “official” name of the merged group?
Shannon: The new official name of the group for this year is “CCT with 2nd Flight Theater Company.”
SBR: Is this a trial for 2008-2009, or was 2007-2008 the trial?
Shannon: CCT with 2nd Flight Theater Company is using the 2008-09 as their trial season together. We want to work our hardest to ensure that this merger goes well, so we all decided a one year trial one would be the safest bet to ensure all of our goals our reached. We will collectively
re-evaluate at the end of the season to see if we would like to finalize the merger. That is why we are keeping “CCT with 2nd Flight Theater,” if by chance we do not continue together, neither theater has lost a season with the their theater’s name being totally obsolete from the public.
SBR: Has a leadership structure been put in place yet?
Shannon: Yes, the leadership structure has been put in in place:
- Artistic Directors: Shannon Khatcheressian & Natalie V. Safley
- Techncial Directors: Rick Wilson & Kevin King
- Season Directors: Ryan Khatcheressian & Matthew Randall
- Marketing Directors: Leah Aspell & Dave Wright
- Membership & Box Office Directors: Erin Anderson, Carla Okouchi & Stacy Rice
- Financial Director: Cory Okouchi
This is an interesting development in DC region community theater. This week also marks the opening performance of Tapestry Theatre‘s final show before they close their doors. Also today, we received an email newsletter from a community theater group in Maryland that is considering closing their doors after the 2008-2009 season. With this merger, are we looking at a broader consolidation of community theater in the Washington DC region?
We’ll be publishing an interview with Peggy Jones, president of Tapestry Theater, next week. We will discuss some of the problems and issues that led to the decision to close Tapestry’s doors.
